Organisers of a charity beach volleyball tournament in Weymouth say funds raised from the event will benefit Friends of Wyvern, a charity that raises money to support the Wyvern School and its pupils.

Entries have now opened for the annual Battens Beach Volleyball Tournament on Weymouth Beach.

This year the tournament is in aid of the Friends of Wyvern and proceeds will go towards new playground equipment that will provide exciting, challenging but safe play opportunities for children regardless of their disability.

The tournament will form part of Weymouth's first Sport and Wellbeing Festival - a two week event of sports and activities on the beach.

Steve Davies, promotions and events officer from Weymouth and Portland Borough Council said: "This new festival builds on the legacy for the Olympics and gives people the opportunity to watch and try a range of different sports including beach rugby, running, football and triathlons."

"Batten's popular charity event has been staged by the law firm for the past eight years," he continued.

Battens Solicitors are inviting businesses and other organisations to enter teams for the beach competition on 23 July.

Cherise Luke-Bennett, one of the solicitors organising the event said: "The event is always great fun. As well as the good natured competition between teams, it's a lovely way for businesses to network with each other on a summer evening. There will be a bar, grandstand seating for the centre court and fish and chips provided by Bennetts on the Waterfront."

Batten's tournament will be held on the same courts as the televised RAF Careers Volleyball Classic, which runs from 24 to 26 July and involves 80 two-a-side men's and women's teams from across the country, also a number of international players.

Pete Bennett, Director of the Classic said: "Battens' charity tournament on the Thursday night will mark the start of an excellent weekend of beach volleyball."
