Weymouth Seafront will be alive with colour and sound tonight.

A huge fireworks display gets underway at half nine, bringing to an end a day of fundraising in the resort.

The day's party has been laid on by Weldmar Hospicecare Trust, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and local businesses.

The display will be enhanced with Weldmar fundraising activities taking place during the day from 10am, and into the evening, on the seafront opposite the rear of Marks & Spencer.

A growing number of Weymouth and Portland businesses are working with Weldmar Hospicecare Trust to host the August Sunday night fireworks whilst raising important funds for a local hospice.

The borough council will work with Weldmar Hospicecare Trust to help manage the event.

Cllr Jason Osborne, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council's Tourism & Culture Brief holder, said: "It's fantastic that both tourists and local residents will be able to enjoy fireworks on the beach at the end of August. I would like to thank all the businesses that have helped to finance this event, and especially to Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.

"The council is always keen to work in partnership with businesses and charities to bring bigger and better events to the borough. I would encourage everyone to come down to watch the display and raise money for a brilliant local cause at the same time".

Jon said "It is important to stress Weldmar are the beneficiary and are not using any of our supporters monies to finance this event. We see the potential to turn this situation into a positive for everyone involved, and are pleased to be the benefiting charity. This will be an opportunity to raise funds for the care of our patients whilst sustaining and developing this traditional summer event in Weymouth".
Head of Firework Business Group, Phil Say, said: "Celebrating the second year of trading at the Weymouth Pavilion as a successful community enterprise we are delighted to be part of this group aiming to provide a great seafront firework display".
