It's National Apprenticeship Week and South Dorset's MP has told Wessex FM he's delighted at new figures for the county.

More than 10,000 new apprentices have started in South Dorset since 2010, according to Government figures.

Richard Drax says it's a great way to earn while you learn.

"I am delighted that South Dorset is participating so fully in setting up new apprenticeships," says Drax. "They are a great way to earn while learning new skills and for many young people, provide an ideal alternative to University."

"A particular focus for the government has been driving up apprenticeship standards and introducing new routes into professions. We are also setting up an independent, employer-led Institute for Apprenticeships, which will monitor and assess standards. I am delighted that so many of our young people are benefiting from these improvements and welcome the contributions, both advisory and financial, from businesses."

"I congratulate all the businesses and colleges in South Dorset who are training apprentices. This is a great investment in the future, not only for the young people concerned but for us all. Higher apprentices learn more, earn more and can develop their careers almost anywhere."

He'll also be a Weymouth College's 3rd Apprenticeship Fair which is being held this Friday 18th March.
