A big community celebration marked the official opening of brand new Poundbury Post Office - the first ever in Poundbury to serve the growing community.

Dorchester Town Mayor Cllr. Robin Potter, "cut the ribbon" today to open the branch at  Buttermarket Stores, 1 Buttermarket, Poundbury, DT1 3AZ. Post Office services are available an impressive 72 hours a week throughout the store's opening hours: Monday to Saturday: 7.30am to 6.30pm; Sunday: 10am to 4pm.

Poundbury is an urban extension to Dorchester built on land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall. A celebratory reception was organised by the Duchy of Cornwall at the nearby Bramble Café & Deli, which also opened today.

The branch will serve the growing community of Poundbury, which already has 2,500 residents and 2,000 employees in 180 businesses.

Sahil and Adriana Dalvi opened a convenience store in Poundbury six months ago, which the Post Office say gave them an opportunity to offer a Post Office to a couple, who have strong retail experience.  Until today the closest branch was a mile away at Victoria Park, 10 Maud Road, Dorchester, DT1 2LW.

Poundbury was built according to the principles of architecture and urban planning as advocated by The Prince of Wales in his book, 'A Vision of Britain' where private and social housing is mixed with local shops and services to enable people to meet most of their daily needs on foot.

Ben Murphy, Deputy Estate Director for the Duchy of Cornwall, said: "The Prince of Wales visited Sahil and Adriana Dalvi in November just after they had opened their brand new store. Local businesses and residents have long said that a post office would be of great benefit and we're delighted that this service is now available in the heart of Poundbury."
Poundbury is a new style local branch where Post Office services are offered from a low-screened, open-plan counter integrated into the retail counter. This allows customers to carry out a wide range of Post Office transactions alongside retail purchases.

Mr Dalvi, said: "There is a real buzz of excitement about Poundbury getting a Post Office.  People really welcome having a branch on their doorstep, without the need to go into town and to have to look and to pay for parking. There is lots of free parking outside. The community also appreciate the planned opening hours. We are delighted to be able to open a Post Office."

Julia Marwood, Post Office Regional Network Manager, said: "We recognised the gap in our existing Post Office branch network and we are delighted to be opening a brand new local branch, with extended opening hours and a Sunday service, to meet the needs of the Poundbury community. This new branch is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office and will secure services for the future. We are making it easier for customers to get their cash, send and collect their mail and do their banking because we know how important these services are to local residents and businesses."
