Dorset residents are above average when it comes to how much money they have stashed in their pension pots, according to a leading pensions specialist.

Portal Financial have been looking at the savings of 2,000 of their customers from around the country.

The average pension pot for a Dorset saver is nearly £70,000.

But there were big differences between towns, with people in Wimborne having on average £118,000, compared to £57,000 being the average pension saving for over 65's in Christchurch.

Jamie Smith-Thompson, Portal Financial, managing director, says: "The map gives an interesting insight into the saving habits of retirees across the country.  Southern counties have the greatest pensioner affluence as do some of the popular seaside and countryside locations such as Dorset or Northumberland*. However, what is clear is that many pensioners have fairly modest pension pots available to them at retirement."
