A Weymouth business is lending its support to a new swimming competition aimed at raising funds for Weldmar.

New Image who sell tiles, kitchens and bathrooms on the Granby Industrial Estate are sponsoring 'Make Waves For Weldmar.'

The event will take place at Osprey Leisure Centre on Portland on Saturday 18th February 2017, from 12.30pm until 2.30pm.

Eighteen teams, each comprised of six swimmers, will race against the clock to see how many lengths they can swim in an hour.

Director of New Image, Steve Cobb said: "Sponsoring this event for Weldmar was very personal for me. My wife had cancer, and died 10 years ago. I wanted to support a charity that helps people in a similar situation. It's also about creating awareness, about the charity and about us".

Katie Slade, Weldmar Events Fundraiser, said: "We would like to invite people from businesses, sports teams, families and groups of friends to take part to make this an all-inclusive event. We would like to thank New Image Tiles, Kitchens and Bathrooms for sponsoring this event; we wouldn't be able to provide our care across Dorset without the support of local businesses like New Image and Osprey Leisure Centre. Osprey Leisure Centre is a perfect venue for us and it's great for us to have such good support".

General Manager at Osprey Leisure Centre, Nigel Williams said: "This is our first Charity Swimathon for Weldmar. We're a community sports trust and it's great when we can do something for the community. It's one of the things we like doing".

The Charity Swimathon is a sponsored event, but Weldmar are not asking for a minimum amount - just that all entrants do their very best.

Money raised will allow Weldmar to continue to offer its care to patients, and their families, across Dorset - whether they require care and advice in the comfort of their own homes, in the Weldmar Wellbeing Centres or the inpatient unit at Joseph Weld Hospice.

The registration fee for the Charity Swimathon is just £60 per team (£10 per person) and teams can register online now at www.weld-hospice.org.uk/swimstar or by calling 01305 261800, or by collecting a registration form from New Image Tiles, Kitchens and Bathrooms or Osprey Leisure Centre.
