Agincare Health and Weymouth College have joined forces to launch a new training initiative.

The Agincare Health and Social Care Academy will see the business working with students to offer a clear pathway to a career in care.

The new Academy at the college has been opened by South Dorset MP Richard Drax.

Raina Summerson, Group CEO at Agincare said: "As examples from job roles across our services show, social care is an immensely rewarding sector in which numerous and diverse career pathways can be pursued. The Agincare Health and Social Care Academy enables us to work with a key educational partner - Weymouth College - to inspire those working in care or looking to follow a career in care."

"The College's Health and Social Care course is outstanding and we are confident that through our partnership we can enhance and enrich that course still further, offering real life business experience and vital employability skills.  We hope to showcase for teachers, students and families both the key issues in the sector and the wonderful career options available. These cover not only direct care related and frontline roles, but various management positions and business administration, hospitality and catering."

"A career in care is a career that means something. We want to really support students and make them feel positive about working within this highly satisfying area. We also hope that this raises the profile of the sector and attracts more people into studying and working in social care."

Nigel Evans Principal of Weymouth College added :  "I believe very strongly in the importance of business and education working together as evidenced by the successful model that is our HIX Academy.  There are lots of opportunities within the care sector in West Dorset offering a wealth of opportunity for health and social care students.  We are extremely pleased to be working with Agincare on the Academy which I firmly believe offers the innovation, enrichment and job creation possibilities so important to the economic future of quality social care services in Dorset."

One student who has seen first-hand the importance of business and education working together to offer support and training is Agincare Business Administration apprentice Milli Threadwell: "I really enjoy working whilst I am learning.  At work I am surrounded by people who know exactly what the business is all about and they are helping me - through their knowledge and experience - to grow and develop skills I could not have so easily learnt if I was purely classroom based."

"I think that companies like Agincare working together with colleges such as Weymouth can really positively help support and develop the learning experience.  As a student you really feel you are part of an experienced team from the beginning and that you are being actively trained for a future in a sector offering a great variety of career opportunities."
