Dorset Diggers Unearth Workshop

Dorset Diggers

1:15pm 26th June 2013

The Dorset Diggers community archaeology group have proved that one small detail can be very important!

Their first project in Maiden Newton led them to discover an old workshop that had been forgotten about since the 19th Century.

The excavation uncovered a two room structure, one room with a double door and the other may have lead to Old Sydling Road, know known as the Drift Road.

The evidence they uncovered suggested it could have been a work shop but a small glass stopper uncovered the rest of the mystery...

On the stopper, was the stamp of "Wright and Co", who were glass makers in Stafforshire.

In the late 19th Century, there was an industrial accident where two workers were engulfed by 100 tons of molten glass. Only their metal belt buckles and the hobnails from their boots survived.

This is a true story of how the smallest details can often be the most important!
