Portland Student Delivers Petition To Number 10

Adam Greaves Portland Academy

2:31pm 28th August 2013

Sixteen year old former IPACA student Adam Greaves completed his 200 miles trek from Portland to 10 Downing Street in London today to present a petition and letters of support for the IPACA Maritime House Campus planning application appeal.

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Traffic and Planning Committee refused planning permission for the redevelopment of Maritime House, Southwell into the Academy Campus in June. Having taken legal advice and consulted with the Education Funding Agency, IPACA announced its intention to lodge an appeal against the refusal earlier this month, since when parents and supporters have been signing a petition.

Adam, supported by IPACA’s Gary Fooks, left on 22nd August to walk from the Academy’s Osprey Quay Campus to deliver copies of the petition and letters to Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Offices, and then onto Dorchester. Over the next four days they cycled, paddled and walked all the way to Westminster to present the petition to the Prime Minister’s Office.

Adam said: “The GCSE results last week were great at IPACA but the new campus is important to keep the education in Portland improving. As I’ve got two brothers coming through the Academy this is my legacy to them and to other Portland children. I really hope that this makes the Council rethink its decision and give us the new campus we need.”

Local parent and IPACA governor Matt Longshaw was among the team providing support for the trek and accompanied Adam and Gary to London. He said: “I felt it was important to have a petition to allow the people of Portland to express their support for the Maritime House campus. But on a personal level it was important to support Adam on his monumental trek from Portland to 10, Downing St as well. He’s a great example of the spirit of the Academy.”

“I’d like to thank the IPACA Supporters Group who arranged the fun-day during our travels and have helped get the message about the petition and the good work that IPACA is doing out there, as well as providing the moral support to Adam.”
