Free Overnight Parking In Weymouth
8:13am 18th October 2013
There’s good news for drivers parking in Weymouth.
From the 1st of November there'll be free overnight parking from 6pm- 9.30am in the Borough's council-run car parks.
The changes were agreed by the council after a trial scheme last winter proved popular with the businesses.
Car parks at Castletown, Chesil and Portland Bill are operated but not owned by the borough council, and they won't be included in the change.
Weymouth & Portland Borough Council brief holder for Transport and Infrastructure, Councillor Christine James, told Wessex FM, "It's great news the council will be offering free overnight parking in Weymouth's council-run car parks. We successfully ran a trial scheme last year over the winter period which proved popular with local businesses who noticed an increase in footfall."
She added that she hopes the benefits seen on the trail scheme will continue now, "This should help to give the town's night time economy a boost and is the first of a number changes we want to make in order to modernise parking in the borough."
The decision to introduce free overnight parking was officially agreed at Weymouth & Portland Borough Council's Management Committee on 2 July 2013.
Free overnight parking is being advertised as a temporary measure until the formal change in parking tariffs as already reported by Wessex FM, which include a roll back in the cost of parking in selected council-run car parks, and should be introduced from the 1st of April 2014. This is when the overnight concession will become permanent.
