New Group Provides Support For Cancer Patients

A woman from West Dorset who's been battling cancer has told Wessex FM how a group in Bridport changed her life.
Sue Rorstad discovered the Living Tree support group while she was undergoing treatment for lung cancer in 2011. At the time she didn't know what to do and was putting off getting treatment;
"I believed at that time that cancer meant sudden death, I'd suspected for some time I wasn't terribly well but I hadn't done anything about it because I was scared. I thought why ruin everyone else's life as well as my own."
After undergoing a series of radiotherapy treatments brave Sue managed to overcome the ilness. During her fight she found support with the Living Tree group who meet at the Friends Meeting House in Bridport. She says they helped her through some tough and lonely times;
"What you find with cancer is you get a lot of attention while you're receiving treatment, and then you get to the end, and from being someone who people take a lot of interest in and pay a lot of attention too, you're just cast adrift and you're on your own. The Living Tree offers mutual support. It's the opportunity to meet and talk with people who know what you're going through."
The Living Tree hasn't been running long and is now celebrating its 1 year anniversary and Sue is keen for other people affected by cancer to go along to one of their Friday meetings;
"It's sad in a way that the thing that brought the group together is an illness. But you got to put that behind you and say these are great people I wouldn't have met."
"We're not a club, you can come and go as often as you like, once a week once a month. It's not something you have to make a commitment too and you can bring a friend or a partner for extra support. I took my daughter along and it was good for her to understand what Mum was going through. It's not a case of walking in and everyone looking at you, everyone is very welcome and you can come in have a chat, tea and a biscuit."
The Living Tree meets weekly from 2pm-4:30pm on Friday afternoon, in the comfortable surroundings of the Friends Meeting House on South Street, Bridport.
