New Food Bank Opens On Portland
6:55am 26th November 2013
Help is on hand for anyone living on Portland struggling to put food on the table.
The islands first dedicated Food Bank launches today (Tuesday 26th November).
According to the latest figures, the number of people relying on Food Banks has tripled in a year and a third of people who're using them are children.
The run up to Christmas is fraught with many challenges for families on a low income who're feeling the pinch but want to give their loved ones a special day to remember.
There are already Food Banks elsewhere across the county in Dorchester, Weymouth and Bridport. The Weymouth hub used to run in partnership with Portland until a decision was made to separate to help more people.
Portland's opening today at St Johns Church Hall is expected to be welcomed among local residents who know they now have somewhere to turn in a food crisis.
