An elderly Bridport couple in assisted living quarters have been honoured for all they've given back to their fellow residents.
Tom and Vera Brown are both in their eighties and live in Hiberia close in Bridport. Yesterday, (12th December) Hazel Richards organised a surprise ceremony for the pair to, as she says, "thank them for all they've done".
Tom and Vera were about to begin a Christmas Bingo session when Hazel went into the community hall and presented them with flowers and gifts. The presentation was met with a round of applause from fellow residents.
Wessex FM spoke to the other residents who said that, despite major health issues, the couple have always had a smile on their faces and hold weekly bingo sessions for residents, they've organised other fun events, and also help personally in any way they can, including doing anybody and everybody's shopping.
Hazel told us that, "They deserve to be recognised for what they do. I've known them for twelve years and they're just outstanding. they've got brilliant characters and I just want everyone and them themselves to know that they are special and that they do so much."
Vera's lived in Bridport all her life and has worked at Colfox school, Tom was originally from London but moved down to the area during the War, and that's when he met Vera. He used to work for a well-known gas company and that's how he ended up knowing the area so well.
om and Vera were delighted with the ceremony, but said they were just doing what made them happy and helping their friends.
Magna, who own the living area, have said a bench with a plaque honouring the pair will be put on the grounds.
