Petition To Save Bridport Bus Service
8:07am 28th January 2014
A campaign to keep bus route 47, from Bridport to Yeovil, through West Dorset villages, is gathering momentum.
A petition's been started amid fears that any plans to drop the service would cause major problems for those in isolated communities who don't have their own transport.
Firstbus say the route's uneconomic.
Wessex FM understands from Councillor Ros Kayes that talks to find a replacement bus operator for the route 47 between Bridport and Yeovil are ongoing.
County Council funding's in place on a temporary basis, but that will end in June.
Councillor Kayes, who represents Bridport on both West Dorset District and Dorset County Councils, is concerned about the human costs of having no bus route. She says she knows of a carer who travels to Yeovil from Mosterton on a Saturday to do his shopping who won't be able to do so if the route is lost.
She also fears villagers to the west and north of Beaminster, at Mosterton, Broadwinsor and Drimpton, could be left without any means of public transport to rail services at Yeovil, or further down the Waterloo to Exeter line at Axminster.
