Council Seek Your Views on Greenhill Chalets and Garden Sell-Off
7:20am 19th March 2014
Beach goers in Weymouth are being asked for their views on Borough Council plans, to sell beach chalets on the seafront.
The Greenhill Chalets, plus ones in the play gardens and along the esplanade could be sold-off to a private owner.
Council leaders say they can't afford to pay for the upkeep anymore and a new owner would bring new investment to the area.
But users are worried a private owner could increase rents and charges if they're taken over.
The Borough Council announced their desire to sell off the area around the gardens and the chalets last November, but pressure has forced them to think again and ask the public what they think.
The floor is now open for people to have their say on the selloff. The consultation period ends at noon on 9th May.
There will also be a chance to talk to the borough council's property team about the proposals at drop-in sessions on:
Thursday 3 April from 3pm until 7pm at The Mulberry Centre, Weymouth
Friday 4 April from noon until 4pm at The Mulberry Centre, Weymouth
Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Finance and Assets brief holder Cllr Peter Chapman said: "We realise that the Greenhill Chalets and associated facilities are a popular asset.
"We believe a new operator will be able to maintain and improve the Greenhill Chalets and associated facilities to a better standard than the council can afford to. The proposals are aimed at securing the long term future of the chalets and preserving the public amenities and access to the associated facilities."
"Anyone interested in the site is welcome to come and see the proposals at the drop-ins and also submit their comments.
"Consultation findings will inform our decision when Management Committee comes to look at this in the summer."
