Battle Hardened Frigate Anchors on Portland
7:48am 21st March 2014
The Royal Navy's, HMS Iron Duke will be sailing into Portland today (Friday 21st March).
The type 23 frigate will sail into port at 11am before inviting guests on board this evening. They will get the chance to have a close inspection of the ship before a weekend of visits from local schools in Dorset. The ship will then return to sea late on Sunday afternoon.
The visit is part of an eight week training programme that has put HMS Iron Duke through its paces, ensuring it is ready for eventualities.
HMS Iron Duke has taken part in Operation Sea Training at naval bases in Devonport and across the English Channel.
Over 180 servicemen and women have dealt with simulated war, fires, floods and famines, disasters and intruders. This will ensure that the crew are ready for action anywhere in the world.
The crew have built up their ability and knowledge to take part in daily tests that start early in the morning and finish late at night.
The Type 23 Frigate is normally found in waters east of the Suez Canal, safeguarding Britain's vital maritime trade routes or the nation's interest in the South Atlantic.
The current Iron Duke is the third Royal Navy Ship of its name, which has been operational for 23 years.
