Portland Councillor Invited To Number 10
10:30am 7th April 2014
Portland Councillor Sandy West has a date at number 10 today.
She's been summoned to Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister as a thank you for the part she played when the Island was battered by gales.
Islander storm Wallace who orchestrated the huge clean up operation on Chesil Beach will also be there.
But it's not the first time Sandy has met David Cameron.
Sandy told Wessex FM:
"I met him when he came to Portland and we had a good chat. He was very keen to find out how things worked on Portland, what went wrong and what went right. And it was just nice that he made a trip down to see us."
Sandy was involved in manning the command centre on Portland which local people set up themselves at Underhill Church.
She says it offered a lifeline during severe weather conditions on February 14th:
" We had people who were stranded because it was Valentines night and there were lots of people out having meals that couldn't get back to Weymouth. We had the Police there and the emergency services, we were doing teas and coffees as we had families who were actually stuck on Portland."
