The Earl and Countess of Wessex have been in Weymouth this afternoon seeing the work of the Safewise Charity at Weymouth's Community Safety Centre.

The royal couple met students from nearby Conifers Primary School and saw a demonstration by Dorset fire and Rescue Fire Cadets during their stay

It was the brainchild of the Dorset Chief Fire Officer Darran Gunter. He says 'Its unique in the way it educates and informs children and young adults not only in what to do in an emergency, but in fire prevention, and overall safety enabling them to make the right choices to minimise risk to themselves'.

But it wasn't him who arranged the visit. That was done by the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset who is a patron of the Safewise charity.

Its Chief Executive, Alison Shelton, told Wessex FM it builds on a similar partnership  with the 'Streetwise' centre in Bournemouth.

She says it addresses the topics in a non confrontational way with youngsters, who learn about risk and consequence and can see the 'Firewise' demonstration which has real flames.
