Portland Sea Cadets Are National Champions

Portland Sea Cadets

8:08am 7th May 2014

Portland Sea Cadets are national champions.

They won the National Drill Competition with a 10 minute display at HMS Raleigh in Plymouth on Saturday.

The team of eight, aged between 12 and 17 marched to The Stars and Stripes forever, The Gael (theme from the film Last of The Mohicans), Rule Britannia, the Can Can, and an orchestral cover of Carly Rae Jepson's 'Call Me Maybe'.

They've progressed from the first round of the competition at RNAS Yeovilton in February and then a regional final to represent the whole of the South West with a routine composed by APO(SCC) Rhys Tanner, aged 19 and 18-year-old APO(SCC) Thomas Louch. Rhys also trained the team, which practiced at the Portland Free Mason Lodge at weekends

It's the best ever result for Portland Sea Cadets, who have been entering the competition for nearly 50 years.

The cadets have been asked to perform their winning routine at the National Trafalgar Parade in Trafalgar Square, in October, the single biggest event in the Sea Cadet calendar.
