Young Pupils Attempt To Design The World's Best Desk

8:12am 7th May 2014

The young brains at Sunninghill Prep in Dorchester are mapping out their designs for the world's "ideal" School desk.

Working with local furniture maker, Custom world Dorset, the pupils will spend the summer chipping away to bring their ideas to life.

Head teacher Andrew Roberts-Wray told us more about the exciting project;

'There isn't a really good, modern, school workstation on the market at a reasonable price. So we have set ourselves the challenge of designing one.'
'At Sunninghill we make education relate to the real world for young people so that it is relevant to their own lives and experience and this exciting project is a great example of that.'
Children in year seven will be working with Custom World Dorset over the summer term. They will have sessions with the firm's design and production experts as well as visiting the factory in Wimborne.
Russell Bowyer, managing director of Custom World Dorset, says the practical experience will be a good for the children;

'This is a great opportunity to get young people involved in British business. I want to see the children get a real hands-on, practical, working experience of creating a piece of furniture that has a proper use.
'It would be fantastic to develop a product that works and is cost effective for schools that we could sell across the UK.'
