It's the competition with a real sting... the World Nettle Eating Championships are back in Dorset!!!!
Hundreds are expected to attend the competition tonight (Saturday 7th June) which has been going for over 20 years at The Bottle Inn in Marshwood.
The pub, which has just won West Dorset's Campaign for Real Ale pub of the year, has had a chequered past and for a while the Stinging Nettle competition was lost whilst the pub was closed.
However, Nigel Blake, the current landlord, told us he was determined to bring the traditional Championships back to the historic inn and to return them to their traditional ways.
Nigel added that the World Nettle Eating Championships are great fun and explained how the event worked:
"It is a race and if you're not careful you will get stung- so basically just fold it nicely and chew. The stinging nettles are cut into two foot strips you've got an hour to eat as many of thsoe two foot strips as you can. So, it's just the leaves- you've got to strip them bare."
He added that the whole weekend is a three-day beer festival and will feature beers from local breweries- one made with stinging nettles! There will also be live music on the Saturday Night from local bands.
The nettle eating competition should start between 5-6pm.
