Top Honours For Dorset Fire Fighters

Dorset Fire And Rescue Badge

7:16am 20th June 2014

An off-duty firefighter who tried to save the life of a car accident victim was among 33 emergency services personnel and members of the public honoured at a ceremony at Lulworth Castle last night.

Daniel Holderness from Dorchester received the Chief Fire Officer Commendation Award from the High Sheriff of Dorset at the ceremony for his actions at the scene of an accident on Cambridge Road in February this year.
Also receiving awards were Steve Arnold, Andy Bilton and Brian Keane, who pulled two drivers out of their cars, just moments before they caught fire after a collision on the road between West Stafford and Crossway, last June. Bilton and Keane had earlier been awarded a Queen's Commendation for their actions.

The awards honoured members of the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service for their bravery and for putting their lives at risk to save others outside of their working hours. 16 individuals from across the county received Long Service and Good Conduct medals for their 'exemplary fire service'.

Members of the public were also honoured for their roles in promoting various schemes ran by Dorset Fire And Rescue in local communities throughout Dorset.

Chief Fire Officer Darran Gunter spoke of his pride at the work of his colleagues.

"I am delighted to be presenting awards, to praise the excellent work being done above and beyond the call of duty with regards to work within the community, making a difference to the service."

The chairman of Dorset Fire Authority Rebecca Knox said: "As a Fire Authority we are keen to invest in our people and I am always proud to celebrate the achievements of Dorset Fire and Rescue Service and members of the public who have taken extraordinary actions."
