Councils across Dorset will be checking up on people who are getting money off their council tax bill because they've told the local authority they're living on their own.
Purbeck, West Dorset and Weymouth and Portland Councils say they'll use data-matching technology to identify people who are claiming discounts that they're not entitled to.
Right now people living on their own are allowed a 25% reduction on their bills, but council’s fear some are abusing the system and disadvantaging other residents.
The review will take place between August and November 2014. Taxpayers receiving discounts which they feel may not be correct have been urged to contact their council's Revenues and Benefits Team as soon as possible.
