Convoy From Tank Museum To Steam fair

Steam Fair Holt 4

9:08am 16th August 2014

Blandford residents will get the chance to welcome a rare gathering of World War One-era machinery today.

A train and vehicle convoy will be making its way through the town centre on its way from Bovington Tank Museum to the Great Dorset Steam Fair in Tarrant Hinton.

It will form part of a special display at the Fair to commemorate the centenary anniversary of the First World War.

Spectators will have the chance to see two McLaren locomotives, built in 1914, pulling an authentic WW1 gun tractor. Weighing in at 72kg and measuring 80 feet, it will form the centrepiece of a convoy featuring a steam lorry, a Daimler lorry and a traction wagon.

All of the crew on board the vehicles will wear period British Army uniform to recreate the feel of the original road runs of the time. Among them will be Roger Dibnah, son of the late steeplejack and TV personality Fred Dibnah.

Martin Oliver, Managing Director of the Great Dorset Steam Fair, says he expects a huge turnout to follow the convoy on its way.

"Everybody today is affected by the First World War and it will be a breathtakingly moving sight to see such a colossal road run arriving onsite in British colours with everyone in uniform."

The Great Dorset Steam Fair will run from Wednesday 27th to Sunday 31st August in Tarrant Hinton. For more information on the times and route of the convoy visit the fair's website at www.gdsf.co.uk
