Condor Will Keep An Open Dialogue With The Borough Council
6:50am 21st August 2014
Weymouth and Portland Borough Council say they will still be talking to Condor Ferries about future plans.
It's following the news we broke yesterday that the firm is moving to Poole after buying a new vessel which Weymouth's current port can't accommodate.
The Austal 102 will be based at Poole Port and will replace the Vitesse which will finish operating in Weymouth in Spring 2015. The company says the new vessel will improve reliability, as well as increasing capacity and improving the comfort of crossings.
Councillor Mike Byatt from the Borough Council, said: "We still have a number of scheduled meetings with Condor because they may wish to discuss with us other plans they have going forward in the long term.”
“The door is still open for discussions with Condor although they've clearly made the decision in the short term for next year that they're going to be relocating with their new vessel to Poole."
Condor Ferry's CEO James Fulford told Wessex FM they are still interested in talking to the council: "We've been a stakeholder for decades in Weymouth and it's important, right and responsible for us to have constructive and sensible discussions with Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.
"We've worked with them for very many years and we're always open to discuss the future with all of our stakeholders and these are certainly one of them."
Councillor Byatt added: "I think it's unfortunate in some respects that Condor has decided to move on but that's clearly a commercial decision. There is a positive for this that we are focussed on our vision for the future in terms of drafting out the town centre master plan and we're confident that we can attract significant investment into the town centre for all kinds of purposes if we actually make best use of all of our key strategic sites.
"We have a scheduled meeting with them [Condor] in September and I'm sure part of that discussion will be what's their thinking beyond the decision they've announced."
