Monday Night Is Firework Night

8:12am 25th August 2014

Weymouth's iconic Monday night fire work displays in August could be coming back.

Local businesses have joined forces with Weldmar Hospicecare Trust to stage a firework spectacular tonight (Monday 25th August) at 9.30pm.

The displays were axed as part of council cut backs.

Jon Panton from Weldmar says the hope is to carry it on.

"There are usually three held through August.  We've agreed if this year is successful for us, we will look to save the other two the following year, so we'll do all three."

"The people who provide the fireworks have heavily discounted as they understand the situation, and the people who run the barge where the fireworks are put in the evening have given their services for nothing."

Weldmar Hospicecare Trust is keen to hear from any Dorset based business that would like to contribute to the big fireworks on Weymouth Seafront (contact Jon Panton Business Fundraising Manager) - T 01305 261800

"Jon said" It is important to stress Weldmar are the beneficiary's and are not using any of our supporters monies to finance this event. We see the potential to turn this situation into a positive for everyone involved, and are pleased to be the benefiting charity, this would be an opportunity to raise funds for the care of our patients whilst sustaining and developing this traditional summer event in Weymouth

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Tourism & Culture Briefholder Cllr Rachel Rogers said: "It's fantastic that both tourists and local residents will be able to enjoy fireworks on the beach on Bank Holiday Monday.  I'm grateful to all the businesses that have helped to finance this event, and especially to Weldmar Hospicecare Trust."
"The council is always keen to work in partnership with business and charity to bring bigger and better events to the borough. I would encourage everyone to come down to watch the display and raise money for a brilliant local cause at the same time."

Head of Firework Business Group Phil Say said: "Celebrating the first year of trading at the Weymouth Pavilion as a successful community enterprise we are delighted to be part of this group aiming to save our great seafront fireworks. The intention is not to only to save the fireworks but develop the evenings for the future into late night shopping and entertainment evenings to benefit the entire town area."
