Dorset Regiments Reunited In Dorchester

Veterans Dorchester 1

8:55am 27th September 2014

Veterans of the Dorset Regiment will be in Dorchester today (Saturday 27 September) to help launch a brand new book about the four Dorset battalions who fought in the Second World War and their post war service.

The book "They Couldn't Have Done Better" sees the soldiers reunited for what could be the very last time.

The Regiment started publishing histories back in 1702 but they stop abruptly in 1939.

Now author Christopher Jary has filled in the gaps.

The Dorset's were one of the first assault troops to land on the Normandy beaches and despite their losses, captured all their objectives in D-Day.

Today's book launch falls on the anniversary of the tragic end of the Arnham battle.

100 years old Bill Chutter from Dorchester will be at the event. he fought in malta, Sicily and Italy with the 1st Dorsets before landing with them in France on D-Day.

The books author Christopher Jary said "Most of the veterans attending the party are now in their late seventies and eighties. They will all have much to rememeber and this book finally tells their story."
