Dorset Fire Authority will merge our fire services with Wiltshire's.

Wiltshire's Fire Authority members unanimously voted in favour of the move a week after Dorset's own members did the same.

Chairman of Dorset Fire Authority Councillor Rebecca Knox said: "It's really important ensure you have a solid financial base to provide a sustainable service. So what we needed to look at the different scenarios of how we might make the savings. That was the option to combine with Wiltshire and Swindon."

It would see a greater emphasis put on providing home safety visits to help raise awareness about fire safety.

A public consultation carried out in Dorset put forward three options for the future of the service.

Dorset Fire and Rescue say merging with Wiltshire was the most popular choice.

Up to £6M could be saved if the two authorities decide to combine.

Merger plans will now have to be put before Parliament and the new Authority could come into existence on April 1st 2016.
