An unusual visitor is making a speedy recovery after washing up battered and bruised on the Dorset coastline.

A seal pup was found on a beach near Abbotsbury in bad shape yesterday by local fishers.

The youngster had bruising on its flippers and was very underweight when rescuers from Weymouth Wildlife Rescue arrived at the scene.

Fran Ponting from Weymouth Wildlife Rescue says  "They named him Skip-Jack Dave and he had his first food of fresh fishy soup. They're hoping to get him onto fresh fish as soon as possible."

"It's very, very unusual for us to have a seal this far up the south coast. So it's quite an experience really! I've never caught one here before."

The youngster has been transferred to the RSPCA's West Hatch centre in Somerset.
