Fears For Future Of Affordable Housing In Purbeck

Published at 10:28am 8th December 2014.

We could see less affordable homes being built in Purbeck after a major change to national planning policy.

A new Government ruling means that developers are no longer required to make any contributions to affordable housing, be it financially, or by building new homes for developments of 10 houses or less.

The big problem for Purbeck is there is a shortage of land and housing developments there are often small.

Councillor Mike Lovell, Housing and Development Spokesperson for Purbeck District Council said: "Affordable housing for young people and families is crucial to the future of our communities."

"Many people are struggling to afford a home so this news is very disappointing."

The new government policy includes an exception for sites in rural areas where the Council will be able to collect a financial contribution towards affordable housing from developments of between 6 and 10 houses.

However, this will not come into effect in Purbeck until 2017.
