2,880 Business Deaths In Dorset Last Year

There were 2,880 'business deaths' in Dorset last year, according to figures from the Office of National Statistics.

The number represents how many companies in the county which were de-registered.

The Money Advice Trust are urging struggling local businesses to seek free advice.

The figures also show that although 3,620 businesses were created in 2013, around one in four businesses won't survive through to their second birthday in Dorset (23%).

Regina Martin from the charity's Business Debtline says everyone in Dorset can improve the local economy, "Shop local. People need to remember that small businesses are the lifeblood of your economy, not just nationally but your local economy. So, how well Dorset is going to do depends on how well Dorset shops, visit your local boutique and use your local butcher."

We contacted the Dorset Chamber of Commerce for comment and Chief Executive Ian Girling sent us this statement,  "Whilst we know that the economy is recovering there is still some way to go.  Targets for reducing the deficit have not been met despite growth in the economy and we so still face some challenging times.  It's particularly important for small businesses to take advantage of the advice and programmes available to them through organisations like the Dorset Growth Hub."
