7 Youngsters Pass Fire Station Training Programme

Dorset Fire And Rescue Badge

Published at 6:56am 23rd December 2014.

They've been put through their paces learning search and rescue techniques and helping get someone out of a smoking building but seven young people have made it through a special training programme at Dorchester fire station.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service helped those taking part in the SPARC (Safer People and Responsible Communities) scheme to get out of their comfort zones and take on new challenges to improve communication, team work and leadership skills.

Rosemary Locock, Education Officer for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said: "The seven day course, which has taken place over the last two weeks, has allowed these young people to improve their communication and confidence skills and raise their self-esteem."

The programme, which is AQA accredited, is specifically designed to provide challenges to enhance communication skills, encourage teamwork and raise achievement levels and self-discipline in a controlled environment.

The participants have received input on completing a CV, as well as gaining valuable qualifications that they can use in the work place. These include First Aid and an Award for Personal Licence Holders, which enables them to sell alcohol in licensed premises.

The project was run in partnership with Job Centre Plus.
