9:28am 8th January 2015

Dorset could have its first Neighbourhood Plan today (8th January) if the proposals are approved by West Dorset District Council.

Residents in Cerne Valley voted in favour of the plan during a referendum in December.

If the District Council approves the plan; local people will have more powers to make decisions on planning applications or changes to existing buildings.

Chairman of Cerne Valley Parish Council, Ian Humphreys, said: "As a front runner, we have been breaking new ground on Neighbourhood Planning, but the end result should ensure that future planning applications will be approved in accordance with the policies established and agreed by the majority of local residents."

"These policies are now enshrined in our Neighbourhood Plan."

The final version of the Cerne Valley Neighbourhood Plan was submitted to West Dorset District Council for examination in December 2013.

Cerne Valley was one of the original neighbourhood planning front runners identified early in 2011.
