Both councils are part of a wider programme of review services in place to help them save a combined 3.2 million pounds by April 2017.

Residents in Weymouth and Portland have been asked how the Marsh playing fields should be managed in the future.

The Borough Council launched a public consultation into the open sports area on Knightsdale Road yesterday.

In a short online survey residents can asses current spending and weigh up alternative methods of delivering the service.

Councillor Andy Blackwood, Community Facilities Briefholder, said: "We would like to encourage as many people as possible to take part in the consultation, whether they currently use The Marsh facilities or may want to use them in the future.

"The council is facing tougher financial challenges and difficult decisions will have to be made, but we want to ensure that these decisions are informed by the communities we serve."

By 2020, the amount of money the Borough council has to run services will fall by more than £9million compared with 2010.

Meanwhile, West Dorset District Council is asking residents to have their say on the funding and support of voluntary and community organisations.
