A woman and a child have serious injuries after being hit by a car in Dorset.

A woman and a child have serious injuries after being hit by a car in Dorset.

It happened over in Bournemouth this morning.

Officers were called at 9.03am today, 8 October 2015, to the incident along Charminster Avenue.

A woman and a child were in collision with a black Volkswagen Lupo. A red Audi A1 was also involved in the incident.

The local woman, aged in her 40s, was taken to Southampton General Hospital with serious leg injuries. A two-year-old boy was taken to Poole Hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Road closures were put in place on Charminster Avenue with the junctions of Sutton Road, Gresham Road and Charminster Road and are likely to be in place for some time.

Police Sergeant Jon Wren, of Dorset Police's Traffic Unit, said: "We are currently investigating exactly what happened and I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the manner of driving of either vehicle prior to the incident to contact me on 101.

"Specially-trained family liaison officers from the traffic unit are supporting family members of the woman and child at this difficult time.

"I would also like to thank motorists for their patience while the road closures are in place."

A 27-year-old man from Bournemouth was arrested on suspicion of a driving offence and is assisting officers with their enquiries.
