Osprey Leisure Centre on Portland has won the "Exceptional Social Enterprise Improvement Award."

They were presented with the gong at a glittering awards ceremony in Bournemouth held by SPORTA UK.

The awards recognised outstanding work in engaging inactive people, energising communities and developing partnerships with the health and social enterprise sector.   Osprey Leisure Centre (South Dorset Community Sports Trust) based on Portland; South Dorset won the Exceptional Social Enterprise Improvement Award and was up against other finalists Abbeycroft Leisure from Suffolk and South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture.

Nigel Williams, General Manager of Osprey Leisure Centre said "I am absolutely thrilled to accept this award on behalf of the team at Osprey Leisure Centre; it is a real tribute and acknowledgement of the whole team involved in building the leisure centre on Portland over the past 10 years.  We have won this award based on the increased visitor numbers and the expansion of the facility plus significant cost savings through energy efficiency.  The centre has invested heavily in reducing CO2 production and increasing renewable energy.  Our ground-breaking initiative centred upon a newly patented type of heat pump which is the first in the country as well as additional savings such as investing in a new pool cover, inverters and associated chemical dosing system - this was a huge investment for a small trust but with massive returns.   The trust in total has saved 81% in gas and 53% in electricity usage despite a threefold increase in footfall.  This model is one that all new leisure centres should be aiming for".

Osprey Leisure chose the Exceptional Social Enterprise Improvement Award as the category reflected the whole picture of what the Trust has set out to achieve. The award was granted to Osprey Leisure centre based on community involvement and trust development both of which are key aims of the Board of Directors and training professionals at the centre.  The proceeds from the cost savings have been reinvested into the facility such as introducing a café to the reception area so that it was more welcoming to visitors who were not familiar with a Sports facility and also introducing an outside patio area for relaxation and socialising.

Mr Williams went on to say "This award was totally unexpected and it has provided a huge boost for the team.  Winning an award makes you feel appreciated and boosts confidence in the knowledge that you are doing a good job and that others in your industry recognise that.  I feel very honoured to now be known as an "expert" in the leisure centre industry".
