11:57am 7th September 2016

We're being invited to get a behind the scenes look at policing in Dorset tomorrow.

Dorset's Police and Crime Panel are meeting at County Hall in Dorchester and are inviting us to go along.

Up for discussion will be Dorset Police's alliance with Devon and Cornwall and the progress made by PCC Martyn Underhill during his first 100 days in office.

The panel of 15 councillors and two independent members from across Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole will meet this Thursday 8 September, at 10am at County Hall in Dorchester.

Chair of the Dorset Police and Crime Panel, Cllr John Adams, said:

'All the Panel members are keen to involve local residents more in our work. Anyone is welcome to attend one of our meetings to view how the panel holds the county's Police and Crime Commissioner to account. There are other ways to be involved too, such as using our webpage at www.dorsetforyou.gov.uk/police-and-crime-panel to ask a question or suggest a topic for the panel to scrutinise, or by following meetings and updates on Twitter using #DorsetPCP.'

As well as reports, forward plans and panel member details the Panel's recently-updated webpages link to plenty of local policing and crime data, including information searchable by postcode. You can also view letters sent by the Panel to the Home Secretary, on Dorset prisons for Dorset prisoners, and port security.

So what do the panel do?

The Dorset Police and Crime Panel's key tasks include:

- Reviewing the Commissioner's draft Police and Crime Plan
- Reviewing the performance of the Police and Crime Commissioner against the objectives in his plan
- Reviewing the Commissioner's annual report
- Holding confirmation hearings for senior appointments made by the Police and Crime Commissioner
- Reviewing the Commissioner's proposed Council Tax precept
- Considering complaints against the Police and Crime Commissioner (in line with responsibilities set out in the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011)
- Appointing an Acting Police and Crime Commissioner if necessary
