Brewers Quay Sold To New Developers

Brewers Quay

(Updated 12:01pm 20th December 2016)

7:21am 20th December 2016

Wessex FM has received confirmation that the BREWERS QUAY building in Weymouth has been sold.

The Brewers Quay site comprises the Grade II listed former Victorian brewery and adjoining Coopers Building, which span 50,719 sq. ft. combined, with existing planning consent for 35 apartments, commercial and events space.

There will also be a new heritage museum at the heart of the scheme, occupying four floors.

This will be supported by a new 25 year lease to give security of tenure and enable the Weymouth Museum Trust to apply for Heritage Lottery funding.

In addition, the purchased site also expands to the underused Newton's Road Car Park to the south, which has existing permission for new townhouses and apartments with soft landscaping.

The nearby Newberry Gardens Car Park will be retained for parking usage for local residents - which has been secured for a further 25 years.

Versant Developments & Homes, which has experience in delivering complex residential and commercial projects, will be working closely with Brimelow McSweeney Architects and Weymouth and Portland Borough Council to draw up slightly revised designs for the scheme, expected to be submitted for approval Q1/Q2 next year.

Versant Developments & Homes intends to deliver a phased build programme to minimise disruption to the local area, due to commence Q3 2017, pending planning approval.

Frank Mountain, Managing Director of Versant Developments & Homes, comments:

"We are aware that the site has changed hands a number of times in the past and has not been brought to fruition, to the disappointment of the local community.

The completion of this deal is positive news for Weymouth and we want to emphasise our commitment to ensuring the future of this historic site."

He adds:

"The delivery of high quality new homes, commercial space and a new museum will help to reenergise this portion of the town, after a number of years of gradual decline."

Cllr Jeff Cant, Leader of Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, and Briefholder for Finance and Assets said:

"We are thrilled to see this development take an important step forward. The Weymouth Museum Trust will be looking after the borough collection, which includes some unique items of great importance to the town's history."

Cllr James Farquharson, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council's Briefholder for Economic Development, said:

"We're confident this development will sensitively restore this Grade II listed building, re-establishing its status as a prime focal point within the resort's historic waterfront."

Versant Developments & Homes is based in Winchester. Projects range from high end apartments to large scale retail units, and a large Hilton hotel with conference facilities linked to Manchester Airport.

Brewers Quay was acquired from Brewers Quay Investments LLP.
