South Street in Bridport will stay open to traffic

South Street Bridport

7:57am 21st November 2017

Campaigners have won their fight to keep South Street in Bridport open to traffic.

The Town Council last night voted not to ask the County County for a trial run of the idea.

They'll instead look at traffic management and 20 mph speed limits.

Local businesses had voiced their concerns over the impact on trade and the creation of more congestion in other parts of the town.

Debbie Bond owns a local business and is from the Keep South Street Open Group.

She said: "The Council will also be looking to setting up a consultation group with stakeholders to look into the traffic problems in Bridport can be alleviated. It appears they have listened and taken the views of the majority onboard. This has been the trader's position all along - that they were operating on false information. Hopefully the strength of the opposition will convince them to knock the idea into the long grass for the foreseeable future."

"The Keep Bridport's South Street Open Group are obviously very happy with the results of the consultation and very thankful that the local population were minded to support the campaign."

"However, it has been an unnecessarily divisive issue, which would not have happened if the issue had been properly discussed before this point. We hope the strength of feeling shown by this consultation will alert those in charge that sometimes they are taking information at face value that should be subject to greater scrutiny."
