Failing Dorchester children's home facing closure

document

3:23pm 23rd November 2017

A Dorchester children's home that was put into special measures following a damning Ofsted report last June could face closure.

Councillors will meet next month to decide the fate of Maumbury House Community Home, which was rated inadequate by Ofsted in June, with the report stating that it had "serious and widespread failures meaning children are not protected from harm."

Some children are now being cared for out-of-county as the current situation is unsatisfactory.

Councillor Steve Butler, Dorset's cabinet member for safeguarding, said the children's safety is the main priority and that they're looking at various options for provision in the future.

"The most severe option is that we could close. Or we could go into a retraining process to bring everything up to scratch to keep it open. We're looking at all the options in between."

Cllr Butler added:

"We have to decide what to do that's best for the children - that's the most important thing.

"We do have some children out-of-county. Obviously it's better to keep them close where they're nearer their relatives so they can have visits more easily.

"But the main thing we need to keep looking at is: Can we look after our children safely? If we can't look after them properly in Dorset then we may have to send them somewhere else."

The future of the Home will be decided on 6th December.
