Public meeting TONIGHT over new train timetable

South Western Railway Class 444

(Updated 10:52am 7th December 2017)

8:36am 29th November 2017

A public meeting is being held tonight to discuss South Western Railway's, proposed timetable changes for the Weymouth to London Waterloo service.

The proposals mean rail users will lose one train per hour to and from Southampton Airport, Winchester and Waterloo and lose a through train to Basingstoke and Clapham Junction.

Ex-managing director of South West Trains, Stewart Palmer who lives in Dorchester has responded to the consultation saying: "These proposals offer a worse service for Dorchester rail users to the places they actually want to go to."

Weymouth & Portland Borough Councillor Paul Kimber has also expressed concerns about the proposed changes saying: "Upwey station will lose the through service to Waterloo. And if the station is not used by customers this will threaten the future of Upwey station."

Councillor Paul Kimber and Stewart Palmer will speak and answer questions from the public at the meeting.

Dorchester Labour activist, Claudia Sorin is calling on people to attend the public meeting in Weymouth this evening to find out more about the proposed changes to the timetable and how they can respond to the consultation.

She said: "A decent transport network is crucial for our region and yet it seems to be getting worse not better. 500 new homes are expected to be built at Crossways but Moreton like Upwey could lose the through service to London. I've also heard that the number 5 bus service for Weymouth, Crossways and Dorchester might be axed. At least with the SWR timetable consultation we have a chance to influence the final decisions."

The Consultation closes on 22nd December 2017, so any comments must be sent in by that date.

The public meeting will be held tonight (Thursday 7th December) at the Safewise Centre Radipole Lane Weymouth at 7pm.
