A Bridport woman who has dedicated herself to supporting cancer patients in West Dorset has been recognised as a 'Beacon of Hope' by the Lymphoma Association.

Jo O'Farrell, who is currently undergoing treatment for lymphoma, the UK's fifth most common cancer, received a Beacons of Hope Award from the national cancer charity at a ceremony that took place in Birmingham.

Jo, who co-founded The Living Tree, a support group for Bridport and West Dorset cancer patients and their families, received nine nominations for the award.

Presenter Susan Rae hosted the awards ceremony. She read out excerpts of the nominations for Jo, which included:

'Jo has been an inspiration to so many people since she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. She helped set up a cancer support group which has grown from 15 to 240 people and is, in many ways, the gold standard for such support groups.'

Another nominator wrote:

'Her compassion and understanding of the need for peer support following a cancer diagnosis has meant that people who would have otherwise been isolated and alone have been able to find the support, companionship and tender, loving care that they need at a difficult and challenging time.'

Jonathan Pearce, chief executive of the Lymphoma Association, said, 'We were delighted to be able to present Jo with a Beacons of Hope Award.

'We provide specialist medical information and support to anyone affected by lymphoma, and the Beacons of Hope Awards are a chance for us to say thank you and to celebrate the achievements of people like Jo who are making a real difference to people living with a cancer diagnosis.'

Around 125,000 people are currently living with lymphoma. It is also the most common cancer under 30s.
