New attendance initiative proving a hit with students

wey valley room 95

12:03pm 17th January 2018

A new attendance initiative at the Wey Valley School in Weymouth is proving a hit with students.

The converted social area, formerly known as the Goldfish Bowl, now provides students with the opportunity to relax at lunchtime playing pool, table football, table tennis and card games, with comfy seating and a large TV.

Rob Cole, Finance & Business Manager said, 'as one of our student attendance strategies, which was recognised at the recent Ofsted monitoring visit, Room 95 is a reward room for our students who achieve 95%+ attendance from the previous half term'.    Mr Cole added, 'The number of students who can visit Room 95 is encouraging and we expect this number to increase during the course of this year'.

The furniture and table games were funded by a Community & Voluntary Grant from Weymouth & Portland Borough Council.  Mr Cole added, 'We are very grateful to the Community & Voluntary Grant Scheme which has enabled a prompt turnaround to deliver this rewarding social area for our students.'

Room 95 was launched to students this term and the response has been pleasing with a number of students visiting at lunchtime plus many more now raising their attendance ready for next half term.

Marcus White in Year 8 said, 'It was a great lunchtime playing pool with my friends - we all enjoyed Room 95 and I think it is a great idea'.

Cohen Emery in Year 9 added, 'Room 95 was fantastic today, it is a really good room for lunchtime'.

William Dennis, also in Year 9 said, 'There are lots of things to do in Room 95 and the atmosphere is really good with TV and music in the background'.

Sara Adams, Principal commended the start of Room 95, adding, 'We know that good attendance can lead to better student outcomes - this was clear from our GCSE data tracking last year and we are using a number of attendance strategies to ensure students are in school and not missing out on lost learning opportunities.  The student response to Room 95 has been excellent and I look forward to seeing more students in Room 95 after February half term.'
