Don't let Pancake Day turn into a tragedy

12:12pm 13th February 2018

With all the fun of pancake day looming, it's easy to forget that besides remembering to top your pancake with your favourite treat - you also need to be mindful of fire safety.

Throughout Dorset on Tuesday evening many will be tucking into one (or several...) delicious pancakes.

Shrove Tuesday traditionally marks the beginning of Lent, where many people enjoy an evening of indulgence before they begin a 40 day fast.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue are warning people to take care when frying and flipping, as fires caused by cooking with oil can be devastating and result in nasty injuries.

Vikki Thomas, Safe and Well Manager at Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, said:

"Making pancakes can be lots of fun for the whole family and they certainly can be delicious. However, over half of all accidental fires in the home start in the kitchen so please take care, especially when cooking with hot oil."

Vikki offered us the following tips to make sure everyone's Shrove Tuesday stays safe...

When using a frying pan or cooking with hot oil, remember:

Never leave the frying pan unattended when the heat is switched on.

Do NOT move the pan if it is on fire!

If the pan catches fire:

Don't take any risks - Turn off the heat if it is safe to do so. Never throw water over it.

Don't tackle the fire yourself.

Once you have finished slaving away at the stove, be sure to make sure that all appliances are turned off.

Making sure you have a working smoke alarm will greatly increase your chances of escaping unharmed, so be sure to check that it works regularly and change the battery every year.

Before digging into your creation, it's a wise to make sure the cooking area is clean.
