The Swanage Pier Marine Villas used to house salt water baths.

Work has officially begun to renovate the Swanage Pier Marine Villas into a visitor centre and café as part of the Swanage Pier Restoration project.

The 190-year-old Georgian building will have a complete internal redecoration to create a reception, exhibition space and shop.

Part of the restoration will also include a glass floor, where visitors can view the historic saltwater baths below.

Rob Hooker, Director of Greendale Construction Limited, said the work will bring the building "back to life" and bring many new visitors to the area.

Greendale Construction will help fit the villa with a partially glazed extension to form a seated café area, refurbished toilets and a commercial kitchen.

Chief Executive at the Swanage Pier Trust, Ben Adeney said he hoped the restoration would "create an amazing area for the local community and public to enjoy for generations to come."

The work is due for completion in July 2018.
