More Dorset children get their first choice primary school

(Updated 10:24am 16th April 2018)

10:23am 16th April 2018

Parents across Dorset are finding out today which primary or first schools their child will be going to in September.

In Dorset, 95.5 per cent of parents have received good news that their child has a place at their first choice of school. This is a 1.5 per cent increase on last year.

Just over 99 per cent gained one of their three preferences, again an increase on 2017. Those who applied online (over 95 per cent) can now see their outcome on the school admissions portal whereas those who sent a paper application form will receive letters shortly.

Dorset County Council processed a total of 5206 primary and first school applications. This includes places for those starting school for the first time, transferring from infant to junior school and transferring from first to middle schools.

To accommodate the number of pupils for 2018/19, extra places have been created at Ferndown First School and Bovington Primary.

The number of children who weren't offered a place at any of their preferred schools dropped by half this year, from 78 to 39. They will be offered alternative schools - any parents wanting to appeal against the decision can do so on the website.

Deborah Croney, Cabinet member for education, learning and skills at Dorset County Council said:

"We're very pleased that Dorset has seen more pupils than ever being offered their first choice of school. It is great news for children - and their parents and carers. The council is continuing to work with schools to ensure there are enough places in the areas we need them."

"I wish all Dorset children the best of luck as they prepare to take the next step in their education in September."
