VIDEO: Dorchester is keeping its market

Dorchester Market LDR TB

7:43am 20th April 2018

Dorchester will not be losing its market.

Those are the words of Councillor Mary Penfold, following a visit to the market on Wednesday.

Nearly 1,700 people have responded to a survey organised by West Dorset District Council.

The market's been in decline over the years and the survey wants to find out why some shoppers aren't using it.

Councillor Penfold who is the Chairwoman of the Dorchester Joint Markets Panel says it's staying put.

"There is absolutely no question of us getting rid of the market. The market is absolutely vital to the town of Dorchester," she said.

"Look at the number of people here today - it's absolutely buzzing and that's what we want to encourage and increase - a vibrant market."

"We need a market which can showcase Dorset. We are asking you to help us by filling in the survey and giving us your opinions on how, if possible, we can improve upon it", she said.

Cllr Molly Rennie, Vice Chairman of the Joint Markets panel, said: "This will be key to help us achieve our vision of a thriving and vibrant market here in Dorchester to rival any town market for quality, value and experience.
