A team of four from Dorchester are putting the pedal to the metal this August as they take on the Race Around Ireland, one of the toughest cycling challenges in the world.

Swimming/triathlon coaches Cate Read and Adrian Goodhand along with Cate's partner Rob Pollard and his brother Simon Pollard are raising money for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

The charity is close to cyclist Cate's heart after her brother Euan Read sadly died from meningitis in December 1994.

This year would have been his 50th birthday and to mark the occasion the team are trying to raise £5,000 in his memory and told Wessex FM that they are over half way to reaching that target.

Cate said: "Euan was admitted to hospital with suspected meningitis, but a lumbar puncture procedure failed to pick up signs of bacterial meningitis and he was diagnosed incorrectly as having the less serious viral form of the disease.

"Tragically Euan died before the mistake was realised and he was found to have bacterial meningitis in the post-mortem", she explained.

"He was 26 years old and he left behind a two-year-old daughter and his partner who was pregnant with their second daughter. Our family was devastated by the loss of such an ostensibly fit and healthy, and vibrant young man."

The group are currently undergoing intense training as they prepare to collectively cycle 2,150 kilometres around Ireland in the space of 96 hours, setting off on Sunday 26th August.
