Up to 30 people put themselves at risk by sitting under a dangerous cliff in Dorset.

Coastguard Rescue teams were called out to East Cliff in West Bay on Wednesday.

Families were sitting under the cliffs which are prone to landslides, while another group were digging for fossils.

Coastguards issued safety advice and explained the dangers.

West Bay rock fall warning

Rock falls can happen at any time but long hot and dry spells followed by rain can increase the risk.

A young girl was killed this week in North Yorkshire due to a rock fall.

Ken Buchan, Dorset County Council's Coast & Countryside Service Manager said:

"The Jurassic Coast is a wonderful place to visit, but it's important to use common sense and caution - stay away from the edge and base of cliffs and always pay attention to warning signs and safety messages."

Remember, the golden rules:

  1. Stay away from the edge of the cliff top - admire the view from a safe distance
  2. Stay away from the base of cliffs: rock falls and landslides can happen at any time. If you are under a rock fall, the likelihood is you will die
  3. Pay attention to warning signs - they are there for your safety
  4. Check tide times before you set off to avoid being cut off by incoming tides
  5. Be aware of mud flows extending across the beaches - don't get stuck
  6. Keep dogs on leads near the cliff edge
