A group of Bridport women have taken part in a nationwide project to celebrate 100 years since some got the vote.

As part of the Now WW1 Centenary Art Commissions project, 100 banners were commissioned to be created by 100 different organisations.

The banners will be used in marches, which will be held in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast.

Bridport was one of the towns selected to collaborate with the project.

The Bridport banner was made by several members of Bridfem, with additional support from visual artist Rosemary Edwards and the Bridport Arts Centre.

The design was based on the previous struggles of women in the local net industry, who managed to keep their pay and become the first women unionised in the area. The central figure on the banner is inspired by the painting of 'The Spirit of Bridport', and is surrounded by flowers made by the community.

Margie Barbour, who was involved in creating the banner, said:

"The word we decided to put on the banner - networking - told the story of the whole experience for me.

"We felt connected to the women of Bridport who had made nets for hundreds of years, to the suffragettes who fought for the vote and then to the thousands of women of all ages and backgrounds who we marched with in London."

The banner was also displayed at the Tolpuddle Festival and Bridport Carnival, and will be accepted in Bridport Museum's collection next year.
